AbstractRobert H. Phinny served as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Swaziland from 1982-1984. After serving as Ambassador, Phinny was a free-lance journalist who wrote on South African Apartheid. Collection documents the published writing of Robert H. Phinny on the subject of South Africa during the period of Apartheid. Materials include correspondence between Phinny and publishers of national newspapers, and articles published from 1984-1997.

Scope and Content of Collection

Collection documents the published writing of Robert H. Phinny on the subject of South Africa during the period of Apartheid. Materials include articles published from 1984-1997 and correspondence between Phinny and publishers of national newspapers.


Biography

Robert H. Phinny was born in Pennsylvania on March 15, 1921. He graduated from Babson College, Mass. (B.S., 1948). He married Sally Gerber. From 1957 Mr. Phinny was self-employed with the R. H. Phinny Co. (investments and business interests) in Fremont, Mich. He was with Gerber Products Co., in Fremont, Mich., in 1949-1957 as salesman and then assistant to the director of public relations. He served in the United States Navy as lieutenant in 1942-1945. President Reagan appointed Robert H. Phinny to be Ambassador to the Kingdom of Swaziland. He served from 1982-1984. After serving as Ambassador, Phinny was a free-lance journalist who wrote on South African Apartheid system of legal racial segregation enforced by the government of South Africa between 1948 and 1990. Phinny died in 2000.
