Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists of seven handwritten bound diaries maintained from October 23, 1906 to July 30, 1957. Diaries were maintained routinely throughout this time with gaps from 1918 to 1922, 1936 to 1944, and from 1949 to 1953 indicating that some volumes may be missing. He writes about his work, the weather, and his family. Mr. Cronkhite traveled as far as New York and Colorado for his work. He mentions creating drawings of turpentine stills for the C.W. Thomas turpentine refinery in Nolan, Michigan and working on conveyors, radiators, engines, and log splitters. He may have also worked in a sawmill and a foundry. He writes about Grace (his sister), Irene (his wife), Ruth and Arthur (his daughter and son). Diaries after the 1920s mention making candy, managing a shop and delivering candy as well as doing household chores. The last entry in his diary is July 30, 1957 when he was almost 83 years old. The diary dated January 1, 1920 - May 9, 1920 was kept by Irene Cronkhite from Carthage, New York when Roy was working in Owasso. This volume mentions activities with the children, the weather, church, finances, trips to town, other family members, and corresponding with Roy.
Biography
The Cronkhite family emigrated to the U.S. in 1888 and lived in Bay City, Michigan. Roy was married (Irene/Rena) and had two children (Ruth and Arthur). He worked for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan and prior to 1920 he moved his family to Carthage, New York. They returned to Owosso, Michigan ca. 1920. On his 32nd birthday, Mr. Cronkhite began recording his daily routine in a set of diaries.
