Traverse district government plats
0.25 Linear feet(1 volume in 1 box)
Ledger of plat diagrams showing land development plans of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad in northern Michigan. Each diagram contains one township, divided into thirty-six one-mile square sections, then into 40 acre lots in the Traverse district. The ledger, maintained by the Land Department, contains 148 printed township plat diagrams with geographic details and manuscript notes.
Formed in 1864, the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad was an important link carrying freight and passengers from the Straits of Mackinac, Michigan to Cincinnati, Ohio. It was eventually incorporated into the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad served to accelerate the settlement of northern Michigan, which was largely a wilderness in the mid-1800s.
