Scope and Content of Collection

The collection includes envelopes and postcards cancelled by the Michigan Soldiers’ Home post office. Each page of the collection contains the item and a typed explanation of the cancel. The collection also includes images of the Soldiers Home and letters and postcards to and from residents of the home collected separately.

Administrative History

The Michigan’s Soldiers’ Home was established in 1885 and the main buildings were completed in 1886. The city of Grand Rapids donated the land, then three miles north of town. The land is east of the Grand River and was a station on the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad. Since the area served mainly people connected with the home a post office was established in 1892. The office became a branch of the Grand Rapids post office in 1900. The Soldier’s Home cancel was used until late 1904 or early 1905. The Grand Rapids, Mich., Soldiers’ Home Br. Cancel came into use around the end of 1904. The two cancels were used for a short time intermingled.
