Scope and Content of Collection

The Elizabeth Cecil collection documents the work of Ms. Cecil written under the pseudonym Clarence Conway. Her correspondence with acquaintances and publishers document her efforts to publish her work. Writings include short stories, plays, poems, songs, short essays and scenarios for movies.

Biography

Mrs. Elizabeth F. Cecil was a member of a Baltimore family who owned a department store into the 1960's. She was the wife of Ernest W. Cecil of Oakland, Maryland. Cecil was a writer and wrote under the pseudonym Clarence Conway. While living in Baltimore she wrote for the Baltimore Eclectic magazine and the Good Literature magazine. She was a member of the Aryan Society, a group that formed in Baltimore to promote Southern art and literature. She moved to Chicago, and spent time in Muskegon, Michigan, c. 1925. She wrote short stories, plays, songs, short essays and scenarios for movies. Her interest was in writing on historic subjects and the classics.
