Scope and Content of Collection
The collection documents Vander Jagt's involvement on the National Republican Congressional Committee. It consists primarily of speeches and tapes, committee and administrative files, and includes copy of the WPA American Guide Series: A guide to its history, highways, and people, 1941.
Biography
Guy Vander Jagt was born in Cadillac, Michigan and graduated from Hope College in 1953. He attended Yale Divinity School and graduated in 1957. He studied law at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a law degree from the University of Michigan. He practiced law in Grand Rapids from 1960 to 1964 and was elected to the Michigan State Senate until 1966. He served as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan from 1966 until 1992. Vander Jagt served as Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee from 1975 until he left the House. In 1992 he lost the Republican primary to Peter Hoekstra. After leaving the House of Representatives he returned to practice law and remained politically active until his death on June 22, 2007.
