If you see the Cin[cinnati] Gazette you will have seen, that I am offered to appointing members of Congress to Office, unless necessary to secure the best talents to the service of the people. What Gen. Harrison’s opinion upon that subject are I do not Know, never having had any conversation with him upon the subject, on that of the individuals likely to be called into service by him. I should think Pennsylvania would be regarded -- and my knowledge of Mr [John] Sergeant, would lead me if I had the appointment to select him for a department if he were not a member of Congress. I cannot speak to Gen. Harrison upon his cabinet, except thru the newspaper publicity unless he should ask me, which I have no reason to suffice he will-- but I feel well assured he will not refer in his appointments the fact that the applicant was or was not among his original friends or preferred, as a first choice, any other man for the Presidency.
