I thank you for your friendly letter of the 20th Augt. It deserved an earlier reply, but the truth is, on my return home I immediately commenced building with the money [?] of the B.W.I. & with about 50,000 more that my ingenuity, or good fortune enabled me to receive, partly through other conditions & partly by voluntary loan on real estate & as it was important to get my buildings done by the first of Nov. & as I had congruently to divide out my contracts among various merchants?, Brickmakers, lumbermen &c &c & to superintend them all, I have, as you may well suppose, been very much engaged, I have had for the last 4 mos. over 500 men in constant employment, have had near 2 million
