Mr. Lincoln a great speech was making,
And at almost each sentence he spoke
The sides of his hearers were shaking,
Because Old Abe tuttered some joke.
But the joke more than others that tickled
(It was so absurb and so curt)
Was --- although the land's in such a pickle
That really there's --- "nobody hurt."

Many Soldiers have fallen in battle;

Many Widows forlorn have been left;
Many Orphans by lone fire-sides prattle
Many Mothers of sons are bereft;
But Abra'm the funny assures us
In a manner both flippant and pert,
That War, as it were, really cures us,
Of ills --- for there's ---"nobody hurt."

Mr. Lincoln may joke as he chooses,
And Seward and Stanton may "chaff"
But whoever else he amuses,
It is'nt the Soldiers who'll laugh,
Poor fellows! when dead and when dying,
They lie down in Virginia's thick dirt,
They --- bleeding and mangled and sighing
Will not believe --- "nobody's hurt!"
