About this collection

"Speaking Out" is a student-centered oral history project dedicated to documenting the history of civil rights and social justice advocacy in Western Michigan. To date, much of this history remains unwritten and unrecorded. By collecting the memories of individuals who have experienced these events firsthand, this initiative aims to deepen our understanding of the local character of civil rights struggle and ensure that these critical histories are preserved for future generations. Built around areas of shared research, teaching, and community-based learning interests across the university, this project also aims to provide a structure that will foster greater interdisciplinary collaboration and support for teaching and learning about diversity.
