Administrative History
In August 1975, Grand Valley State College, in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Polish Heritage Society and the Grand Rapids Public Schools, sponsored a study tour to the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. The trip was financed by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Participants attended a series of lectures on Polish history, politics, literature, and culture, took Polish language lessons, and participated in various field trips and tours around Poland. After the trip educators were asked to develop educational materials to teach students about Poland. The Grand Valley faculty, students, and public school teachers included Clara Brainard (GV Educational Studies Institute), Mr. and Mrs. Earl Enge (GV Sociology), Nancy Firlik, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haurek (GV Sociology), James McClafferty, Edward Muraski (GV alum ’75), William Peterson (GV Economics), Halina Poplawska, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Robart (GV alum ‘75), Edward Symans, and Donald Wozniak (GV alum ’67, GRPS).
Following this trip, Grand Valley arranged its first foreign university partnership with the university in Krakow, Poland. Grand Valley students could spend the spring/summer semester in Poland and Polish faculty members visited Grand Valley. In 2004, the program was expanded to allow graduates of the Cracow University of Economics (CUE) to study the master of public administration at Grand Valley and for Grand Valley faculty from the school of public and nonprofit administration to lecture at the Polish university.
