born

Grand
Rapids
,
MI
in
1952
.
After
graduating
from
Hope
College
, she
entered
the
civil
service
in
1976
, and then
went
to the
Naval
War
College
for
officer
training
in
1978
. She then
served
as a
naval
officer
in
various
capacities
until
retiring
in
1999
. She
served
in
Hawaii
,
Guam
,
Japan
,
Portugal
,
Norfolk
, and
finally
at the
Pentagon
,
serving
with the
Defense
Intelligence
Agency
. She
describes
her
different
assignments
in
detail
, and also
says
a
good
deal
about
life
in the
Navy
and
issues
confronted
by
women
officers
during
the
period
in
which
she
served
.
