Peterson
enlisted
in the
Navy
when
he was
just
17
years
old
and was then
sent
to
Rhode
Island
for
training
in
1942
.
During
training
George
and a
friend
volunteered
for
submarine
service
and were
transferred
shortly
after
.
George
spent
nearly
a
year
training
for
submarine
service
and was
finally
on his
first
war
patrol
in
1943
. He
spent
two
years
making
six
war
patrols
throughout
the
Pacific
, with
port
breaks
at
Panama
,
Hawaii
,
Guam
, the
Marshall
Islands
, and
Midway
.
After
the
war
George
was
part
of the
police
force
in
Hawaii
,
where
he
helped
to
patrol
the
base
.
George
had
made
it
to the
position
of
First
Class
Gunner’s
mate
when
he was
discharged
in
1952
.
